UPVC vs Aluminium Windows and Doors: Choosing a Fenestration System for Nepal
UPVC and aluminium dominate Nepal's modern window and door market — here's how they actually compare on insulation, cost, maintenance and style.
UPVC and aluminium have largely replaced plain wood and steel for windows and doors in newer Nepali homes and commercial fit-outs, but the two systems suit different priorities.
Thermal and acoustic insulation
UPVC's multi-chamber profile is a poor heat and sound conductor, giving it a real edge for bedrooms facing busy roads or homes wanting lower heating/cooling loads. Aluminium conducts heat and sound far more readily unless it uses a thermal break profile, which adds cost.
Strength and frame slimness
Aluminium is stronger per unit thickness, letting fabricators build slimmer frames with larger glass area — the reason architects favor it for big sliding doors, glass facades and contemporary designs where visible frame width matters.
Maintenance in Nepal's climate
UPVC doesn't rust, corrode or need repainting, and cleans with just soap and water — a real advantage given Nepal's monsoon humidity and dust. Aluminium needs a powder-coat or anodized finish to resist corrosion long-term and can show scratches more visibly.
Cost
UPVC systems are generally more affordable for standard casement and sliding windows. Aluminium costs more, especially with thermal-break profiles, but can work out competitive for very large openings where its strength lets you avoid extra structural framing.
Where each one wins
UPVC: bedrooms, homes on busy roads, budget-conscious residential projects prioritizing insulation. Aluminium: large glazed facades, commercial storefronts, and any opening where a slim, strong frame matters more than thermal performance. Many Nepali homes end up mixing both — UPVC for bedrooms, aluminium for a statement living-room sliding door or shopfront glazing.
What to check before ordering
Confirm profile series (thicker multi-chamber UPVC profiles perform better), glass specification (double-glazed units add real insulation value over single glass), and hardware brand — cheap hinges and locks fail well before the frame does on either system.
