Construction Chemicals 101: Admixtures Every Nepali Contractor Should Know
Beyond cement, sand and steel — the additives that actually control concrete quality on site.
Construction chemicals rarely get budgeted properly on Nepali sites, but a few key admixtures make an outsized difference to durability.
Plasticizers and superplasticizers
Improve workability without adding water (which weakens concrete) — essential for dense reinforcement zones like beam-column junctions where concrete needs to flow around closely spaced bars.
Waterproofing admixtures
Integral waterproofing compounds added directly to the concrete mix (not just surface-applied later) reduce capillary water absorption — commonly used in water tanks, basements, and terraces in addition to membrane waterproofing.
Curing compounds
In Nepal's dry pre-monsoon months (Chaitra-Baisakh), curing compounds that seal in moisture matter as much as the concrete mix design itself — under-cured concrete loses significant strength regardless of grade.
Bonding agents
Epoxy or acrylic bonding agents are essential when adding new concrete to old (extensions, repairs) — without one, the new pour delaminates from the old surface within a few years.
Buying tip
Always check the manufacturer's technical data sheet for dosage rates — over-dosing plasticizers is a common site mistake that can actually delay setting time and weaken final strength.
